1. Q: Does using the BatTat hurt the animals?
A: In general, the BatTat is much more calmly received than other types of tattoo; many animals show no reaction except to wonder what the heck you’re doing to their ear with that buzzing thing.
2. Q: How damaging is the BatTat to the tissues, compared to the clamp method?
A: The difference is dramatic. When a light is held behind the ear after marking, the bruising can be seen immediately--and where the clamp leaves a single massive blot of insulted tissue, the BatTat leaves only a thin line surrounding each digit.
3. Q: How old do rabbits have to be to be tattooed?
A: I really don’t recommend marking them before 3 weeks of age, but there are scientists using the BatTat to mark even at birth and before. (Don’t ask me how!)
4. Q: My poor rabbit has been tattooed half a dozen times and NOTHING will ‘stick’. I bet the BatTat won’t either.
A: Wrong! The BatTat is especially good at this kind of tough ear, and has been the last resort of many owners when nothing else has worked permanently.
5. Q: Can you tattoo at a show with this? Is it as messy as a clamp with the ink and all?
A: Sure you can, and it’s very readable as soon as you are done! Usually there is little to no excess ink on the ear, and what there is wipes off easily with a damp cloth or thumb.
6. Q: Why is the BatTat so expensive?
A: Because of the years of research and development behind it. We worked very hard to make the BatTat the best and most durable battery powered tattooer on the market, and when you consider that the average Tat sold in the first year ‘survived’ five years or more, that’s really not very expensive when you consider how much other methods cost you in time and frustration. And the BatTats are better now than they were then!
7. Q: So why are those other tattooers that are similar so much cheaper?
A: Because all they’ve done is copy the BatTat. They don’t know why it works, they just want to make money.
8. Q: What species are being marked with the BatTat?
A: See the “Species Marked” page--last we heard, that was the list. Every time we think we’ve heard it all, someone tries it on something new!
9: Q: How do I tell if the needle is dull?
A: First, check your technique; you should be using firm pressure to make your tattoos their best. If despite this, a Tat that normally makes good marks begins to fail, or the marks don’t ‘stick’, it’s time to change your needle.
10. Q: I clean and clean and CLEAN this thing and it never runs ‘clean’. What happened?
A: The most likely thing is that it’s been overloaded with ink at some point. It only takes a few seconds at most to load plenty of ink into the BatTat, and each ‘load’ will do 3-7 digits depending on your technique and the individual BatTat. Work with your Tat and it will work better for you.
11. Q: How large should my tattoos be?
A: We recommend practicing your block printing at about a quarter to three-eighths of an inch; this is easily read by most people. Slightly larger is fine, but you don’t want to have to unfold the entire ear to see what the mark is!
12. Q: I don’t write neatly; how do you make it look so tidy?
A: Some people write the tattoo carefully (and lightly!) in the ear with a pen first, then go over it with the Tat; we recommend lots of practice making block letters of the right size, even just with pen and paper. Just like an important poster, form your letters with care, one stroke at a time, and the results are worth the patience.
