What are BatTat supplies, and when do I need to order them?
BatTat supplies are things that get used up--batteries, ink, inkwells, cleaning solution, and occasionally, needles.
NEEDLES:
Needles are the single most frequently requested replacement, but in all honesty, they really do not need to be replaced very often. While the first ‘flush’ of sharpness will wear off, the needle is still quite serviceable for much longer as you, the user, become more confident and use a bit more pressure to mark properly.
So try a bit more firmness in your technique before replacing your needle--it often makes the difference between a needle ‘lasting’ a month and a year! (Most needles used by experienced Tat owners last 2-3 years and more before truly needing replacement.)
INK & INKWELLS:
One bottle of approved BatTat India ink can last for several years, but we really recommend replacing your bottle annually to keep it fresh and avoid occasional poor marking due to ink which has frozen or been contaminated. Much depends on how many animals you mark in a year’s time, too.
Inkwells are recycled materials which can be used over and over again, or can be treated as disposable according to your needs. We recommend using only small amounts of ink per session, since the Tat really doesn’t require much, and using a napkin or paper towel--something quite absorbent and disposable--to adsorb the remaining ink and wipe the inkwell clean.
Overloading the Tat with ink is not beneficial, as it will not be properly clean without extensive soaking and rinsing in the cleaning solutions. You’ll get the feel for the right amount as you work with your Tat.
CLEANING SOLUTION:
A bottle of cleaner will last quite a while, but will probably run out before your ink will. Use it freely and often along with 90% isopropyl alcohol to keep your Tat in perfect condition. Tip a few drops of alcohol into a clean inkwell and run the Tat in it until the liquid is black with removed ink, then run the Tat on a paper towel until dry. Repeat, alternating cleaning solution with alcohol, until the Tat runs no ink onto the towelling.
A Tat used with proper amounts of ink will be easily cleaned; one that is constantly over-loaded will be very difficult and more likely to require service to keep it functional for its intended lifespan.
BATTERIES:
Batteries are the most required replacement, naturally. How fast you use your batteries depends much on how you use your Tat--are you good at removing your finger from the switch when you slip or the rabbit moves, or do you hold it down regardless?
We really recommend practicing lifting your finger to minimize battery use as well as accidental or mis-placed markings.
A well-maintained BatTat will last many years and perform with minimal aggravation to all.
